The style of haircut that we call “Mohawk” was worn by young "braves" charged with protection of the tribe. The Cossacks of Ukraine in the 16th-century shaved their heads and left behind a long central strip of hair which they braided into a topknot. Known as an oseledets, this hairstyle may date back to the Middle Ages, and has been adopted as a symbol of resistance against the Russians.
